Futsal @ Tuesday's Practices

A big part of a coach’s responsibility is to make a decision on what course action (training session & techniques) to undergo over the off season that will best prepare their team for the upcoming summer league and tournaments. Some coaches choose not to play in winter soccer leagues, double up on practices and play exhibition games, some decide to play in leagues but prefer to play in 11v11, 9v9 or what we are playing right now 6v6 with the official 5 size balls. There are lots of practice and preparation options out there what or which one is the best? I guess it all depends on who you talk too

On top of all the soccer practice options out on the market to improve ones technical skills Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).recognized Futsal as their official indoor soccer game. The game of Futsal is primarily played with a size #4 ball however I believe the smaller the ball the more a player must focus on technique and control of the ball.

I have decided starting this Tuesday January 19th 2010 and every Tuesday until the end of our indoor training to utilize the min soccer ball to practice with. Technical control of the ball must be developed at more of a rapped pace in order to implement tactical skills and plays heading into our summer league.

Those girls that don’t have a min soccer ball you can pick one up at the club house or at any sports store usually for less than $10.00. You are required to bring one to this coming Tuesday practice.

Please, provide your feedback on this Tuesday’s practice decision.

  1. Seems like a good option that is worth a try. I do notice that the girls could use more practice on the 1st touch. Emphasize controlling rather than having the ball simply rebound off any part of their body. Which happens quite a few times during games.
Hopefully these smaller balls will help them achieve this. If not, we need a drill where we can strictly concentrate on the 1st touch.
Alternatively, I can suggest the girs work on 3 vs 3 (or 4 vs 4) scrimmage where the emphasis is to:
    1) Control on 1st touch
    2) Adjust
    3) Pass or shoot. If pass, call out the girl's name to whom you are passing to (get the girls to be a little more vocal and communicate as a team out on the field).
The main issue with 5 vs 5 scrimages is you have girls sitting on the side-lines when they should really be touching the ball as much as possible during practice time. Just my observations.
Keep up the excellent work girls, coaching team and cheering parents... SoccerDad8 :)

  2. In the next few weeks my goal is to see an improvement on the girls first touch... this is why I'm implementing min balls opposed to #4 or #5 balls in practice. The min balls force the girls to be more delicate and fluent - however this is just my assumption even though I did like the response I noticed in the girls last year when I introduced the min balls at an once a week practice. Now that I have a extra practice day I can utilize more often the 3v3, 4v4, 3v2 and other competitive formations for the girls to achieve more control and comfort with the ball in close environments.
